The recently published report Improving Supervision for Frontline Jobs: A Massachusetts Case Study of Skilled Nursing Facilities, focused on Mass Senior Care’s pilot project to improve retention and job satisfaction for CNAs and other frontline staff. In partnership with the National Fund, SkillWorks and PHI International, Mass Senior Care tested an approach to improve job quality by investing in more effective supervision of frontline jobs. This pilot implemented a Coaching Approach to Supervision, developed by PHI, in five skilled nursing facilities across Massachusetts. Findings indicated that effective supervision can create a more supportive culture with fewer disciplinary actions and can improve staff members’ ability to communicate with coworkers and residents to solve complex problems; in turn, increasing staff satisfaction and engagement.
