Program Description:

As part of the continuing efforts under President Biden’s initiative to improve nursing home transparency, safety and quality, and accountability, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the CMS announced new actions on January 18, 2023 to reduce the inappropriate use of antipsychotic medications and to bring greater transparency about nursing home citations to families. This session will review the CMS QSO related to schizophrenia diagnosis and antipsychotic use, the CMS audit process, and changes to the Care Compare site to include the new postings of citations under dispute. In addition, resources for non-pharmacological approaches for managing resident behaviors will be provided.

Objectives:

  • Understand the CMS audit process for schizophrenia coding.

  • Identify changes to the 5-star rating system related to identified errors in schizophrenia coding.

  • Discuss the new postings of citation under dispute to the Care Compare site.
