Friday, April 6, 2018

Mass Senior Care Office, Waltham

9:00 a.m.— 12:00 p.m.

(Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.)

Program Overview:

Contemporary healthcare practice is becoming increasingly more complex.  Ethical and practice dilemmas related to Advance Directives, particularly legal guardianships and health care proxies are becoming more a part of everyday practice for social workers, case managers and nursing professionals. Through a case example presentation the concepts of Do Not Resuscitate, Limited Medical Treatment Orders, MOLST, Guardianship, Roger’s Guardianship, Powers of Attorney and Health Care Proxy will be illustrated.  Current ethical dilemmas confronting healthcare professionals will be discussed as well as the role of family members in the decision-making process of their loved ones. The clinical criteria for assessing competency for individuals will be reviewed and clinical casework approaches for practice will be discussed.

Objectives:

At the conclusion of the program, attendees will be able to:

•Identify 4 clinical criteria for assessing resident decision-making capacity.

•Distinguish the issues when considering Health Care Proxy revocations and Health Care Proxy affirmations.
